Computer Science and Software Engineering

Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at Southampton has pioneered many of the most important advances in computer science of the past 10 years.

Our BSc Computer Science provides in-depth coverage of the subject delivered through study, lab and project work and will give you the grounding to work in any area of the computing industry.

The BEng Software Engineering will enable you to pursue a career in any area of the software industry. 

The MEng Computer Science provides additional breadth and depth of study, including a wide choice of advanced technical options. It prepares you for the next generation of systems and software by exploring hot research topics such as complexity theory, social media technology or biologically inspired robotics.

Our MEng Software Engineering gives you the chance to learn how software engineering must adapt to deal with new technologies and challenges. It allows you to achieve Chartered Engineer status in the shortest time.

Electrical Engineering

We have outstanding facilities including a state-of-the-art Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory and excellent computing facilities and help desks. Generous scholarships are available.

Our BEng Electrical Engineering covers all topics related to electrical power, from the electromagnetics of superconducting systems to the principles of power generation and transmission, and the development of more efficient and sustainable energy sources. Individual project work with one of our research groups will allow you to work at the frontier of knowledge.

The MEng Electrical Engineering programme includes more advanced engineering topics, management studies, industrial law and group projects. You will participate in a group project in year four, where you will tackle wide-ranging engineering challenges and gain industrial experience.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Our outstanding facilities include a £100m state-of-the-art interdisciplinary clean room, a high-voltage laboratory and excellent undergraduate lab facilities. Generous scholarships are available.

Our BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering covers topics ranging from the technologies of electrical power and control to analogue and digital electronics and computing. Project work with one of our research groups will give you the opportunity to design and build state-of-the-art systems.

The MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree develops the management skills needed to become a leader in the electrical and electronics industry. In year four, you will be challenged to solve a problem for a real industry or to transfer technology from the University to industry. This programme can also be studied with the first two years spent at our Malaysia campus.

Mechatronic Engineering

Our outstanding facilities include our state-of-the-art Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory and excellent computing facilities and helpdesks. Generous scholarships are available.

Our BEng in Mechatronic Engineering degree meets the increasing demand from industry for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills in the fields of robotics, flexible manufacturing, electromechanical power systems and electrical power transmission and distribution systems. Theory is supported by practical experience and project work, which is often linked to industrial activity.

The MEng Mechatronic Engineering degree develops a cross disciplinary approach to finding solutions for systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control. This four-year course provides the opportunity to study more advanced engineering topics and delivers the skills required for a challenging career.

Our BEng Electronic Engineering will enable you to work in any area of the electronic industry. In your third year, you can tailor your programme to suit your interests and career aims and an individual project involves building a challenging and unique electronic system.

Information Technology in Organisations

Filling the gap between computer science and organisational applications of IT systems, the ITO programmes provide access to outstanding computing facilities and learning resources.

One hundred per cent of our students in work six months after graduating are in professional or managerial positions (NSS, 2014).The BSc Information Technology in Organisations is offered as a three-year Bachelor of Science programme, while the MComp Information Technology in Organisations is an integrated Master of Computing programme over four years. The MComp offers advanced technical options and a group design project in year four. It also meets the academic requirements of the British Computer Society, enabling you to achieve Chartered IT Professional status in the shortest time.

Web Science

This unique cross-disciplinary programme combines the social and technical understandings of the web and is based on world-leading research and postgraduate education in web science.

This new degree enables you to choose between two specialist pathways: BSc Web Science (Computer Science) and BSc Web Science (Social Science). On both pathways, there is a shared core curriculum, which develops a critical understanding of the web. You will examine social and technological approaches to understanding the web, as well as the disciplines, research methods and theory used to analyse and develop it. In your final year, you may choose an individual research project, drawing on a range of disciplines and methods.

Zepler Building and Zepler Institute

The University of Southampton’s Zepler Institute (ZI) is a unique multidisciplinary research centre that brings together world-leading expertise in photonics, quantum technologies and nanoscience.

The largest photonics and electronics institute in the UK, ZI membership stands at over 350 staff and Phd. students led by Director Professor Sir David Payne. Facilities comprise around 100 laboratories, including those based in the University's £120M cutting-edge Zepler Institute Cleanroom Complex.

Electronics and Computer Science - taught courses

Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) is unique in the UK in its integration of electronics and computer science, its distinguished record of research success and the scale of its research activities.

We are proud of our unrivalled ECS facilities with state-of-the-art, industry-standard equipment housed in superb laboratories. The new Mountbatten Building which opened in October 2008 is one of Europe's leading multidisciplinary state-of-the-art cleanroom complexes, providing flexible research space for nanotechnology and photonics. The building provides a research base for the ECS Nano research group, and the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre. The Tony Davies HV Laboratory is an active centre for research into dielectric materials and insulation systems, as well as high voltage and related phenomena. We do also have ECS Computing Laboratories with permanent help desk support and even computing facilities specifically reserved for MSc. students.

Optoelectronics Research Centre - research

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) is a world- leading research institute in photonics and laser technology. Led by Professor Sir David Payne, its roots date to the birth of lasers and optical communications, nearly 50 years ago.
