Acoustical Engineering

Our acoustics courses are taught at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), a world-leading centre for acoustics with one of the UK’s largest anechoic chambers.

Our students study at both Highfield Campus and Boldrewood Innovation Campus. Boldrewood Innovation Campus is a short five minute walk from the main Highfield Campus

Aeronautics and Astronautics

We are ranked fifth in the Complete University Guide 2017. We offer a three-year BEng programme, as well as four-year MEng programmes with areas of specialist focus.

Our three-year programme of technical and practical study, the BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics , meets the highest international professional standards. The first year provides a background in engineering science, with a focus on aerospace. Towards the end of the second year you will take a short course in flight testing and perform experiments on board a Jetstream aircraft. The third year involves an individual project and specialist modules.

We have a range of MEng programmes where you can specialise in the following areas: Aerodynamics ; Airvehicle Systems Design ; Computational Engineering and Design ; Engineering Management ; Materials and Structures ; Spacecraft Engineering . Semester abroad and semester in industry programmes are also available. We also offer an additional Industrial Placement Year to those studying our MEng programmes.

Our students have flying opportunities through the Students’ Union or the University Air Squadron.

On graduation, there are exciting career opportunities in some of the world’s leading companies, including F1, BAE Systems, Siemens, NASA, Lockheed Martin and Rolls-Royce. Our graduates have gone on to careers in race car design, civil and military aerospace, systems engineering and research. Our degrees are also excellent preparation for careers in many non-aerospace industries, particularly the commercial sector.

Civil Engineering

We are ranked 2nd in the UK for Civil Engineering, and 100% of our graduates were in a career after six months (Guardian University Guide, 2018). Our SUCCESS industrial scholarship scheme includes work experience and a bursary.

The first three years of our BEng Civil Engineering and MEng Civil Engineering degrees are identical and provide a solid education in the fundamentals of civil engineering design and application. The BEng satisfies the educational base for Incorporated Engineer status.

Our links with industry are strong and many of our MEng Civil Engineering students are sponsored by companies. There are opportunities for vacation placements and excellent employment prospects on graduation. Our MEng degrees fully satisfy the educational base for Chartered Engineer status.

Our MEng Civil Engineering and Architecture course offers a crossover between structural engineering and architecture, preparing students for working with architects as part of large multidisciplinary teams. The course is fully accredited by ICE and IStructE.

The MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering offers comprehensive coverage of environmental engineering, with an emphasis on protection and improvement of the natural environment in the service of society. The degree is closely linked to the civil engineering programme and is fully accredited for Chartered Engineer status with ICE.

The year in industry provides valuable experience and is accredited as employment training for membership of ICE and IStructE.

Civil Engineering students also benefit from state-of-the-art facilities at our new Boldrewood Innovation Campus and our heavy structures facilities which will be housed in the new National Infrastructure Laboratory.

Engineering/Physics/Geophys/Maths Foundation Year

Southampton engineering courses are ranked in the top ten in a variety of UK league tables. On successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will be able to choose from 17 undergraduate degree disciplines.

The Engineering/Physics/Geophys/Maths Foundation Year is suitable for UK, EU and international students without the traditional entry requirements. The year is the first year of a four, five or six-year programme leading to a degree in our engineering, computer science, maths, physics or geophysics disciplines.

​In this preliminary year of study you will learn the core principles of mathematics, mechanical science, engineering principles and electricity and electronics. You will also undertake laboratory work and a variety of assignments to develop your critical thinking and problem solving.

Environmental Science

Southampton is one of the UK’s leading universities for environmental science. Our programmes offer a range of field courses and practical modules.

Our challenging BSc Environmental Science  programme embraces ecology, geology, oceanography, demography and law. A pathway system allows you to specialise in biodiversity and conservation, environmental change, sustainable environmental management or aquatic environments and resources.
The MEnvSci Environmental Science  follows the structure of the BSc in years one and two. You will specialise further in years three and four, with an advanced field course, a work placement and an advanced-level individual research project in your final year.
The BSc Environmental Monitoring and Modelling will develop your technical skills to collect, interpret and communicate environmental data. The BSc Environmental Management with Business will provide you with a unique blend of environmental and business expertise, skills and experience for a career as an environmental management professional.

Mechanical Engineering

We offer a three-year BEng programme, as well as four-year MEng programmes with areas of specialist focus. All of our degrees are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), with our MEng programmes providing direct route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Our BEng Mechanical Engineering covers all the traditional core subjects, with opportunities to take options which reflect your particular interests, for example automotive, enhanced materials, mechanics of materials. We have a range of MEng programmes with specialisms in the following areas: Acoustical Engineering; Advanced Materials; Aerospace; Automotive; Biomedical Engineering; Computational Engineering and Design; Engineering Management; Mechatronics; Naval Engineering; Sustainable Energy Systems. We also offer an additional Industrial Placement Year to those studying our MEng programmes.

Our graduates are in great demand and enter a range of rewarding careers, including automotive and aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, materials engineering, marine and offshore industry, defence and the armed forces, research and development, IT and financial services.

Ship Science

Our new Boldrewood Campus provides state-of-the-art facilities for Ship Science.

96% of graduates were in professional jobs or further study six months after graduation (DLHE, 2014/15); our students are actively sought by leading marine companies for sponsorship and work placements.

Maritime design is an important theme throughout our BEng Ship Science, which meets the core technical requirements for accreditation and allows graduates to embark on gaining their chartered status. In your final year, you will conduct an individual research project of your choice and a small-group concept design project. Our degrees are recognised for officer training in the armed forces by DTUS.

Our MEng courses provide direct route to Chartered Engineer status. They enable specialisation in: Advanced Materials; Engineering Management; Naval Architecture; Naval Engineering; Offshore Engineering; Yacht and Small Craft.

Our sought-after graduates enter careers in naval architecture, offshore and marine engineering, yacht design, ship building and repair, industrial research, ship classification, defence, management and IT, or stay on to do postgraduate research.

Flight simulator

The Southampton flight simulator is unique in the UK, developed by students for students.

Aeronautics and Astronautics students are able to test their aircraft design projects in the flight simulator. The facility plays an important role in the design, testing and manufacturing of air vehicles. Our third-year aerospace design students produce a full aerodynamic design for a microlight aircraft, which they test-fly in the simulator, and it is also used in project work, both as a visualisation platform and as a hardware-in-the-loop framework for external kit. Student project work also contributes to developing and extending the capabilities of the simulator.

µ-VIS X-Ray Imaging Centre

The μ-VIS Centre incorporates six advanced X-ray computed tomography (CT) systems, with the flagship scanner based in engineering representing one of the largest and highest energy microCT systems in the UK at present.

Audiology - taught coursees

Our integrated, comprehensive and stimulating audiology postgraduate courses are designed to meet the diverse learning and development needs of those new to audiology, of qualified audiologists and of related audiological professionals.

The world-renowned MSc Audiology programme has been running for 40 years, it has distinct learning outcomes and learning activities from our BSc Audiology, providing Master's students the opportunities to develop deeper understanding of audiology as well as refined and advanced cognitive, communication and working skills.

Sound and Vibration Research - research

ISVR is widely acknowledged as the world’s foremost centre for teaching, research and consultancy in the field of sound and vibration.

Formed in 1963, the Institute is committed to improving our understanding of acoustics and vibration and their impact on the wellbeing of the community and the quality and performance of engineering products.

The ISVR is renowned for its contributions to reducing noise and vibration in engineering applications - rail and aircraft noise for example - but also for fundamental work on understanding how humans hear sounds and process this information.

Acoustical Engineering - taught courses

ISVR is widely acknowledged as the world’s foremost centre for teaching, research and consultancy in the field of sound and vibration.

Environmental Science - taught courses
