Music

At Southampton you can make and study the music you care about and develop the skills you need to sound out your future.

You can specialise in areas such as performance, composition, music history and cultural studies, or study a broad range. Alongside your classes you will participate in high-profile performance projects and have the option to join some of our many performing groups and societies. Graduates go on to pursue careers in the music industry, education, music therapy and many other fields.

We are among the largest and liveliest music departments in the UK and were ranked first in the country in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).

Our innovative and eclectic curriculum and vibrant research culture create a flourishing environment for studies in performance, composition and musical scholarship of all kinds. Our research-intensive MMus offers a comprehensive range of options and features three pathways – Musicology (including critical theory, history and analysis), Composition, and Performance – leading to a final project, which may be a dissertation, recital or portfolio.

We offer a large number of studentships to support doctoral level studies across the whole range of the discipline, including performance and composition as well as musicology.
