Accounting and Finance

Our Accounting and Finance programmes are ranked in the top 25 Accounting and Finance degrees in the UK (Complete University Guide, 2019) and are accredited by industry bodies including ICAEW, ACCA and CIMA.

You'll have the opportunity to apply learning to real-world contexts, and the ability to personalise your degree with a range of optional modules.

BSc Accounting and Finance teaches you how to prepare and interpret financial information, as well as gain an understanding of investment and finance. Choose from a variety of optional modules including topics on international banking, marketing or project management to broaden your knowledge of business. BSc Accounting and Finance with placement includes the addition of a one-year industry placement in year three, where you can apply your learnings to a real business.

Entrepreneurship

Business programmes at Southampton are considered to be among the best in the UK, with 96 per cent of our students satisfied with the quality of the course (NSS, 2013).

Our BSc Business Entrepreneurship provides a broad appreciation of business theory and practice, combined with specialist knowledge of entrepreneurship. It will develop key skills, such as problem-solving, communication, self-management and teamwork, and will enable you to operate at a strategic level in a variety of organisations or even set up your own company.

A central theme is entrepreneurial behaviour and how this relates to innovation, opportunity recognition and development, and new venture creation. You will be able to choose optional modules from Business, as well as a language or other approved subjects.

This course is also available with a placement.

Marketing

A strong emphasis on digital and data-driven marketing sets our courses apart from many other UK marketing degrees.

We cover the latest digital marketing techniques and you’ll learn how to use consumer data to make effective marketing decisions – a skill set that is valuable in the current job market.

Our BSc Marketing provides up-to-date knowledge of marketing grounded in marketing theory and practice. The focus is on delivering value for customers and shareholders, using technology to manage the customer experience and engaging with them through digital media. Your optional industrial placement year will give you valuable work-related skills.

Alternatively, study BSc Marketing with Study Abroad which includes a year spent studying at an international partner University. Choose from a range of destinations including Hong Kong, Austria, France and Spain.

Business & Management Sciences - research

Our Business postgraduate research degrees come in two forms to meet different, but complementary needs. The PhD is entirely research-oriented, whereas the Doctorate in Business Administration deals with strategic business problems.

The PhD programme can lead to a wide spectrum of career options, in both academia industry. You might be funded by a UK research council, an overseas government or the University itself. Unlike a PhD, which addresses a purely academic question, the DBA research you will engage in will deal with high-level strategic business issues and problems.Your research will be conducted and applied within the organisation of your choice.

Finance

New for September 2019 entry, BSc Finance teaches you how to prepare, interpret and analyse financial information for a variety of users, as well as gain an understanding of investment and finance.

Considerable emphasis is placed on key quantitative and analytical skills, and your learning will be informed by the latest industry research in Fintech, high-frequency trading, corporate finance, portfolio theory and alternative investments.

Course Leader, Professor Andrew Urquhart, says "BSc Finance is a rigorous new programme which will equip students with a strong foundation in finance, along with the necessary skills to analytically and critically evaluate key issues in finance from a variety of perspectives."

This course can also be combined with a placement year.
