Our degree programmes have strong links with industry which has resulted in students securing summer internships and employment. All degrees are accredited by The Geological Society of London.

Our BSc Geophysical Sciences provides a solid grounding in geology, physics and mathematics. You will be able to tailor your degree to your interests with options ranging from tides and waves in oceans to studying Earth from satellites.

If you are looking for a professional career in geophysics or quantitative Earth science, the MSci Geophysics is for you. It will provide you with a broad knowledge of contemporary geophysics and a range of geophysical, geological and mathematical skills.

Our MSci Geophysics (with study abroad) includes the opportunity to spend time abroad studying at another globally recognised institution. You till take advantage of different research specialisations at these institutions and study continents with different geological histories.

Oceanography

Oceanography is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), Europe’s leading centre for the study of marine and Earth science.

Studying oceanography at Southampton will allow you to explore the physical, chemical and biological processes of our planet’s marine environment in a unique and innovative centre for research excellence. All of our oceanography degrees are accredited by the Institute for Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Our BSc Oceanography will give you the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a variety of scientific careers in the marine and coastal sector. The course introduces you to the ocean system and helps you develop a foundation in the biological, physics, chemistry and geology of the marine environment. Sudying the sciences of the ocean and the land in our BSc Oceanography with Physical Geography will give you the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a wide range of scientific careers. You will develop a foundation in biology, chemistry and physics of the marine environment a sound background in earth systems and land applications.

If you are looking for a professional career in the marine sciences, our MSci Oceanography is for you. You will first learn how the fundamental sciences interact in the marine environment. Later, emphasis is placed on subject-specific knowledge of marine science.

Our MSci Oceanography (with study abroad) enables exceptionally talented students to spend their third year at a top university abroad. The outcome is an integrated master’s qualification which will prepare you for a wide range of career choices strengthened by your international experience.

If you are interested in sciences and languages, our MSci Oceanography with French offers an ideal introduction to a career in Europe, as it includes one year at the University of Bordeaux.

Marine Biology

Marine Science is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), Europe’s leading centre for the study of marine and Earth science.

Boat based fieldwork is an important component of our degrees and thanks to our unique waterfront campus you can go from classroom or lab to boat in minutes. All of our marine biology programmes* are accredited by the Institute for Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)

Our BSc Marine Biology with Oceanography examines the biology of marine organisms in their environments, from intertidal coasts to deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems. Practical skills are emphasised.

Our integrated MSci Biology and Marine Biology provides you with the understanding of terrestrial and marine biology in a multidisciplinary environment. Coursework is supported by practicals, boat work, a Mediterranean field course, intertidal ecology field course and independent research project.

Our MSci Marine Biology will give you a comprehensive understanding of the biology of marine organisms and their relationship with their environment. Your independent research project in year four will be conducted alongside specialist modules.

The MSci Marine Biology (with study abroad) degree follows the pathway of our core MSci Marine Biology in years, one, two and four. In your third year, you will have the opportunity to study at a top overseas university.

National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS)

The National Oceanography Centre Southampton, Waterfront Campus, is the integrated collaboration between the Southampton-based part of NERC's National Oceanography Centre, and Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton.

As a world centre for degrees in ocean and Earth science, we seek to understand how the ocean fits within the dynamic Earth system. Our unique Waterfront Campus (NOCS) attracts prominent researchers and educators from around the world, who join us to work within the areas of geochemistry, geology and geophysics, marine biogeochemistry, marine biology and ecology, palaeoceanography and palaeoclimate and physical oceanography.

Our ocean and Earth Science degree programmes include Oceanography, Marine Biology, Geology and Geophysics. Students studying here enjoy access to research vessels, ocean technology and opportunities for fieldwork and scientific cruises not traditionally found in standard university environments.

Ocean and Earth Science - taught courses

As a leader for Ocean and Earth science research and teaching, we seek to understand how the ocean fits within the dynamic Earth system, and how past oceanic changes are manifest in the geological record.

We offer a range of Masters level postgraduate training and research opportunities for students looking to push the boundaries of their knowledge and learning. Our postgraduate taught degree programmes have been developed over the last 40 years with employers, international collaborators, governments and graduates. We attract students from many different countries and academic backgrounds.

Based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, you will be working alongside researchers and academics that are having a globally significant impact and are world-leaders in their field. We are also home to the UK research vessel fleet and offer cutting-edge facilities in an internationally recognised center for research excellence.
