Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology)

Cardiac physiologists work autonomously and as part of a mulit-disciplinary team in acute settings. Their actions and interpretations inform critical healthcare decisions and impact on life and death situations.

Work at the very forefront of technological advances aiding the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions. Our BSc Healthcare Science is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists, and is a route to professional registration.

You’ll be based at our main Highfield Campus and a state-of-the-art cardiorespiratory lab at University Hospital Southampton, one of the country’s leading acute hospitals, where you’ll learn to detect and quantify cardiac and respiratory problems in people of all ages and pathologies.

Medicine and Health Sciences at Southampton

Southampton General Hospital is the Trust’s largest location, and is a major centre for our teaching and research at the University of Southampton.

Medicine at Southampton is a thriving and ambitious multidisciplinary faculty: a national leader in medical education, with an outstanding reputation for combined expertise in research and teaching.

We have trained thousands of doctors and scientists since our foundation in the early 1960s and have led cutting-edge research in areas as diverse as cancer, osteoporosis, asthma and nutrition. We lead innovative learning and discovery across the lifecourse, from before birth to the elderly, by investing in multidisciplinary research teams, creative educational programmes and initiating external partnerships and collaborations.

Teaching in Medicine also takes place on Highfield campus in the Life Sciences Building. 

Health Sciences research
Research in Health Sciences takes place at Southampton General Hospital, where we have earned a reputation for excellence. In addition, the Healthcare Science degree, with its high level of patient interaction, is fittingly delivered on this site.

Medicine courses at Southampton

Although most courses in Medicine are taught in the new Life Sciences Building at Highfield, some teaching takes place at the Southampton General Hospital.

Additionally, 2nd and 3rd year themed attachments arelocated at the University Hospital site.

Health Sciences - research

On all measures of academic excellence the Health Sciences at Southampton has received rankings that place it among the leading centres in Britain in terms of research output and expertise.

It has continued to receive high scores in the research assessment exercises, delivers high quality publications in health sciences and also has a successful record of raising research funding and grants from funding organisations.

Within Health Sciences we generally have well over 100 full and part-time postgraduate research students

Medicine - research

Medicine at Southampton is one of the UK’s leading centres for biomedical research and offers a range of postgraduate opportunities in both basic and clinical science.

Our postgraduate programmes are delivered in the multidisciplinary academic units, ranging from Cancer Sciences, Human Genetics, Infection and Inflammation, to the study of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease and epidemiology.

Our research encompasses the full spectrum from fundamental discovery science to clinical innovation and we have a particularly strong reputation for translating new discoveries into a clinical setting.

Medicine - taught courses

In Medicine, we offer opportunities for postgraduate masters level (HE7) study. We have strong links with the NHS, both in teaching hospitals and the local community. Our postgraduate programmes are based mainly at Southampton General Hospital.
