Cardiac physiologists work autonomously and as part of a mulit-disciplinary team in acute settings. Their actions and interpretations inform critical healthcare decisions and impact on life and death situations.

Work at the very forefront of technological advances aiding the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions. Our BSc Healthcare Science is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists, and is a route to professional registration.

You’ll be based at our main Highfield Campus and a state-of-the-art cardiorespiratory lab at University Hospital Southampton, one of the country’s leading acute hospitals, where you’ll learn to detect and quantify cardiac and respiratory problems in people of all ages and pathologies.

Medicine
Medicine at Southampton is a thriving and ambitious multidisciplinary faculty: a national leader in medical education, with an outstanding reputation for combined expertise in research and teaching.

We have trained thousands of doctors and scientists since our foundation in the early 1960s and have led cutting-edge research in areas as diverse as cancer, osteoporosis, asthma and nutrition. In Medicine, we offer opportunities for postgraduate masters level (HE7) study. We have strong links with the NHS, both in teaching hospitals and the local community. Our postgraduate programmes are based mainly at Southampton General Hospital.

Medicine at Southampton is one of the UK’s leading centres for biomedical research and offers a range of postgraduate opportunities in both basic and clinical science.

PhD
Aimed at nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, health scientists, psychologists and social scientists, our PhD research doctorates will help you develop the skills for high-level healthcare research. You’ll be supported by two expert academics with experience in your area of study.

PhD with Integrated Clinical Practice (Clinical Academic PhD)
Our Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship Scheme is for early career nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, aspiring to become clinical academic leaders. You will be embedded in a leading research group at the University’s main campus or at our purpose-built clinical academic facility based at University Hospital Southampton. Your PhD research is agreed by you, the University and the relevant Trust and will address a key research priority for both organisations.
